A Day in Monterey, CA (Sushi Donuts, Poison Oak Honey, and Balsamic Vinegar)

My friends and I went to Monterey this weekend to try out the sushi donuts from The Poke Lab. We also visited Monterey’s Tasty Olive Bar on Cannery Row (who knew olive oil and balsamic vinegar could taste really good?) and Water + Leaves on the Fisherman’s Wharf (I really wanted to try that poison oak honey). I recommend all those places if you are ever in the area!

Viva Espresso (Salinas, CA)

Viva Espresso is the coffee shop I frequent probably too often.

Hot press paper is really something to work on. I’m not entirely used to it yet.

Definitely could have pushed the values of this one a lot more and varied a lot of the colors so it doesn’t look so flat. Good notes for me to be better at my next outing.

Plaza Club Apartments (Salinas, CA)

I shredded some artwork today.

I did an earlier plein air painting and it didn’t turn out very well. I was walking around feeling bad about it for a while.

Then I sat down and did this. There’s a lot of things I wish I could have done better, but I did alright, much better than the one I tried earlier.

That was when I realized I didn’t need to hold on so tightly to art I didn’t like. It doesn’t matter if it was on decent paper or I spent lots of time on it, no point in art existing if I’m not that proud of it.

So I tossed it in the shredder. Then I shredded some more older, bad pieces I couldn’t stand to look at. Life’s too short to be holding on to things you don’t want.

Mills Canyon Park (Burlingame, CA)

I was warned about the ticks, poison ivy, and spotted coyote before entering the park.

With this urban drawing, my SF Bay Area trip is all done! Thanks for joining me this past week and a half as I traveled, ate, sold zines, and explored new places! Look forward to the ebook of this as well as future travels!
